The building project commenced in March 1990, having been designed by Bush, Parkes, Shugg and Moon, Architects, Mr Garth Murphy being the principal architect. The principal building contractors were Stubbs Constructions. The building was completed and handed over on 3rd December 1990.

The facility has 67 self-contained bed-sitting rooms. 64 of the rooms are occupied by permanent residents whilst 3 rooms are made available to people in need of respite care. The facility is a friendly, welcoming place and has become a home with all the residents being part of the Yaraandoo family. It is not surprising that there is such a warm atmosphere sensed on entering the building and engendered by the care lavished on the elderly residents by the staff. It is obvious that the residents do care about each other and are considerate to those less fortunate than themselves.

A catholic service is held in the chapel every day. Twice a month the Anglican Minister holds a service, with the Uniting Church sending a Minister once a month. Many of the residents attend services regularly and obviously gain a lot from being at Yaraandoo.

All meals are cooked on the premises. Every consideration is given to supplying meals palatable to the residents and also good for their health. Residents also have a choice at lunch and teatime and can always find something they will like. Yaraandoo also supplies about 60 meals a day to Wynyard Meals on Wheels services, including meals for the Wynyard Spencer Day Centre.

The Community Care Service commenced in July 1994 after a request by the Commonwealth to create this service. A variety of services provide assistance to elderly people wishing to stay in their own homes. This is co-ordinated by Community Care Director Mrs Jill Savell, who organises carers and other services needed by the people eligible for such care. Refer to the Community Care (NW) page for more details.
